What should I check for?

The following tests are recommended for gay/bisexual men:

  • Gonorrhea (swabs/urine)
  • Chlamydia (urine)
  • HIV (blood test)
  • Syphilis (blood test)

Your doctor may also test for Hepatitis A, B or C and other infections if symptoms are present. We have emphasised Syphilis because there's currently an outbreak among gay/bisexual men in Melbourne. Most gay-friendly doctors and clinics are aware of the outbreak, but some outer-suburban doctors may not realise testing is necessary. Remember to ask your doctor for Syphilis testing by name!

Where can I go for a checkup?

Any GP can order the tests, but not all GPs see gay clients on a daily basis, so your GP may not think to test for Syphilis, or may be a bit rusty when it comes to pre and post HIV-test counselling. If that sounds like your doctor, Melbourne Sexual Health Centre has fact sheets you can print and bring along to your consultation, with brief doctor-to-doctor information.

How can I find more info?

What if I'm anxious/embarrassed?

Remember your doctor has done thousands of similar checkups – for him or her, it's no biggie. Sometimes the discomfort comes from uncertainty about how your doctor will perceive your sexuality. Over 85% of participants in the Health In Men (2002) study reported looking for gay-friendly healthcare. The Gay Friendly Clinic Group is a loose alliance of gay-friendly clinics in the Melbourne metropolitan area, created to make it easier to find a gay-friendly doctor – and hopefully to reduce potential barriers to regular sexual health screening.

What's this site all about?

Other sites go into the gory details about sexually transmitted infections, but we know you're probably happy to leave that stuff to your doctor. goTest is all about two things: how often you need checkups, and what you can do to make sure you get checked on schedule.
